Summary[]

Ben Lindbergh and Meg Rowley follow up on an earlier conversation about ERA vs. FIP and banter about Seiya Suzuki being posted, Noah Syndergaard’s explanation of why he left the Mets, the rumored Sandy Alcantara extension and the future of the Marlins, how Canada’s new policy about unvaccinated athletes could affect the Blue Jays, and a dirty punch thrown by Willians Astudillo. Then (26:49) they discuss whether and how Ben, who’s eligible to vote for the Hall of Fame for the first time, should cast his ballot in a year with an unusually divisive slate of candidates.

Topics[]

  • Ben's first Hall of Fame ballot
  • How PED usage impacts Hall of Fame voting
  • Importance of the hall and player plaques
  • Character clause
  • Curt Schilling
  • Applying the character clause to some players but not others
  • Importance of taking the ballot seriously
  • Is being a first ballot Hall of Famer that important?
  • Writers who abstain from voting
  • Baseball ELO rankings

Banter[]

  • Episode 1774 follow-up: Differences between FIP and ERA and the value of each
  • Seiya Suzuki's posting by NPB
  • Marlins extension of Sandy Alcantara
  • Noah Syndergaard's comments on leaving the Mets
  • Canada's refusal to grant exemptions to unvaccinated players on the Blue Jays or other MLB teams
  • Willians Astudillo's involvement in a brawl in the Venezuelan winter league

Notes[]

  • If there is a MLB lockout then Seiya Suzuki's posting window will be suspended until the lockout is lifted.
  • Ben discussing the wrestling he is doing with how to vote, or if to vote, now that he is an eligible BBWAA Hall of Fame voter. Ben struggles to apply the character clause as a reason to keep out Curt Schilling but not apply it to PED users. He does not think any players will be elected this year.
